One Percent for the Planet was founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard (Patagonia) and Craig Mathews (Blue Ribbon Flies) after deciding businesses should give back for using the Earth’s resources.

Members pledge 1% of annual sales—not profits—to environmental causes. Since then, companies worldwide have joined, contributing over $808 million to environmental nonprofits, all driven by the principle: commit first, then figure it out.

20 Years later, Cortazu is proud to be part of this movement.

why 1% for the Planet Matters

One Percent for the Planet is all about making sure when businesses claim to give back, they really do. Members promise to donate at least 1% of their yearly sales to environmental organizations. The organization then certifies that those donations are real.

Their purpose is to inspire commitment and action so that the planet – and future generations – can thrive.

Their mission has three parts:

  1. To inspire commitment and action so that our planet and future generations thrive.
  2. To accelerate smart environmental giving and prevent greenwashing.
  3. Grow their pool of over $808 million in sales in environmental giving to date.

Cortazu joins 1% for the Planet, the global network of businesses pledging to give back to environmental causes. By committing 1% of our annual sales to certified environmental organizations, we’re doing more than just making gear; we’re helping protect the natural world that inspires every adventure.

Why this matters:

  • 1% for the Planet requires every member to certify their donations by submitting revenue and donation proofs, ensuring real accountability.
  • Giving isn’t just about writing checks; at least half of our giving must be monetary, but we can also support through volunteer time, in-kind donations, or even advertising donations.
  • Membership means more than giving; it helps brands tell the world what they stand for. Using the official 1% for the Planet logo signals to customers that Cortazu is serious about sustainability, credibility, and doing our part.
